Heart Disease Facts

February 6, 2018   |   Evidence in Integrative Healthcare

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US, with men leading women in statistical occurrence through 2015. To put it into perspective, in 2015, someone had a heart attack every 40 seconds! Heart disease costs the US approximately $200 billion each year which includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity. Medical conditions surrounding lifestyle choices that put people at higher risk are quite relevant for integrative healthcare (IH) providers to offer management choices or referral. Some of these conditions are include diabetes, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use. IH providers would be wise to include these and other potential factors including family history during a new patient intake discussion. Carrying this discussion into future care, with suggestions for improvement, is advised.
