Beware of fraudulent COVID-19 tests

There are always those who take advantage of vulnerable populations, and the COVID-19 pandemic has created its own opportunities.  As you look to provide guidance to your patients during this time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, verifying the legitimacy of testing and treatments your patients are seeking can be of great service.  The FDA maintains a list of fraudulent COVID-19 tests kits and products, including a quick search tool, on their website.

If you are considering recommending a diagnostic or serology test for COVID-19 for your patient, depending on your scope of practice, please verify its legitimacy. There have now been numerous reports of tests advertised to doctors and clinicians by certain laboratories and commercial pharmaceutical manufacturers that have not received approval by the FDA or have not been granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the FDA. The FAQs on Testing for SARS-CoV-2 page on the FDA’s website can help you identify the appropriate COVID-19 tests.
